Critique: 2 Research and Analysis(Proposal Content) #6

"If scientists and inventors are the master of technology, how about the rest of us?"

Topic
Slave to Technology.

Background
"If nanotechnology maintains its current pace of development, it will give birth to a computer that has the information processing capacity equivalent to every human brain combined by 2060."

- Jeong Kim, Bell Labs' president

Technology has improve the way people feed, clothe and shelter themselves. Technology has also changed other aspects of everyday life, such as health care, education, job satisfaction and leisure time activities.

It appears that as technology advances, it will continue to play an increasingly significant role in the future and shape of mankind. We must remember that whatever technology does to our lives, technology in itself is not to blame, but rather how we use it. We as human need to become aware of bad and good aspect of technology. There are difference between using the technology to support our life and overuse the technology without knowing the actual purpose of the technology. Humans should not become so dependent on technology that it dictates the way in which we live our lives, and the fundamental decisions we make. Technology is certainly a virtue of human intelligence, but we must be careful not to phase ourselves out, and create more wrong than good. In conclusion I would say that technology should be used to support our efforts, but not replace our efforts.

Problem Identification
- we rely a lot on technology
- a lot of people dedicate their lives to the technology.
- new technology make us less productive and removing the little life out of us.
- overuse the technology without knowing the purpose.
- we use technology way too much, to the point where it might be using us.
- technology kills how human suppose to interact. We dont physically see each other, people do not want to interact with other people anymore.

Ideation or Concept
'Slave to Technology' is an interactive art about how a person become so obsess with technology until they become part of technology (or slave to technology). The idea behind this installation is how we as human are too depend on technology until it defined the way we live. Technology is created to support our efforts not to entirely replace our efforts. For this installation I have narrow down the technology to computer technology because I think computer technology has gone too far and consistently develop.

'Slave to Technology' is a combination of Multi-touch Technology and Interactive Video.

For this installation, visitors will see a box that has screen on top of it. The content of the video is a virtual human. This will give the illusion that an actual human is inside the box. Visitors are able to select option to instruct the virtual human(slave). The human will act as a computer brain. The overall screen design is similar to a computer but in analog form.

The screen design for the interface is analog(drawing/writing/scribbling) to show technology in a human perspective.

Aim and Objectives
- To create awareness on how much we depend on technology until it removes the little life out of us.
- To show that technology need us as much as we need technology
- To show computer in analogue perspectives.
- To show technology does not only in digital form. It can be analogue and mechanical.

Motivation
- Whether or not I am a slave to technology.
- Experiment with Multi-touch hardware and software.
- To improve my knowledge on hardware-software integration.

Ideation 6

Topic
Beat Box

Background
vocal is the basic instrument for music.12 tone musical scale may have it roots in the sound of the human voice. art of producing drum beats, rhythm, and musical sounds using one's voice is call beat box. it is type of performing art. One tradition is thought to have originated in India several thousand years ago: the tradition of bol, and the Chinese developed Kouji

Problem Identification
Ideation or Concept
This installation is a musical interface application. For the interface, it will have different type of instrument. Visitors are able to drag and drop the instrument to the character. The character will start beat boxing according to the instrument and the second character will appear. The visitors can drag and drop a new instrument to the new character.

Multi-touch technology will be use in this installation.

Aim and Objectives
to give freedom to the user to compose their own songs using the interface.
to encourage the visitor to play music even with zero knowledge in music
to create a user friendly music interface

Motivation
I want to create a music interface that is user friendly and only require minimal musical knowledge.

Ideation 5

Topic
Circuit Bending/Noise Music

"all in all, art should get a sound thrashing"
- Richard Huelsenbeck

New idea about performing arts and experimental music in progress.

See you later alligator.

Ideation 4

Topic
Uncover The Truth.

Background
Trafficking of children is a form of human trafficking and is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of children for the purpose of exploitation.

Today, thousands of children, some as young as three or four years of age, are trafficked from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and countries in East Africa, and sold into slavery.

These children live in an oppressive environment and endure harsh living conditions. They work long hours in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, live in unsanitary conditions, receive little food, and are deprived of sleep so that they do not gain weight

Problem Identification
- children forced into slavery
- economic pressures which force women and girls into servitude.
- each year, by some estimates, hundreds of thousands of girls and boys are bought, sold or kidnapped and then forced to have sex with grown men.
- people never aware of this serious problem.

Ideation or Concept
Uncover the truth is an interactive art about the topic 'child trafficking'. It's a combination of information design and interactive installation.

The first part of the installation is information design. A visitor can read facts about child trafficking through a LCD screen. In front of the screen is a stack of crates with projection mapping technique. In the end of the presentation, 'uncover the truth' button will appear. When the user click the button, crates mapping will change to kids image. This will give the idea that the child were kidnapped and were kept inside a crate during the trafficking.

Aim and Objectives
- To create awareness about child trafficking.
- To give the idea what the kids went through during the trafficking.

Motivation
- Because it's the worst kind of human exploitation imaginable.

Ideation 3

Topic
Hey! Let's Take a picture.

Ideation or Concept
An interactive installation where visitors are able to take picture, fill in the name and store it in the database. A gallery with 3 different image of different visitors will appear near the photo booth to visualize the connection between visitors. It makes the connection base on first letter of the visitors name. This also will give the illusion of the visitor taking picture with another visitor.

Aim and Objectives
- to explore Physical and Human Characteristics
- to visualize the connection between strangers with same name characteristic.
- to gives the illusion of having a group photo with random people.

Ideation 1

Topic
Fun!

Background
Fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different.

Problem Identification
There must be some things that you don’t like to do. What if you could make them more fun?

can FUN make more people exercise?
can FUN make people save the environment?
can FUN encourage people to recycle newspaper?

Ideation or Concept
This installation is an interactive floor game. It will have series of light all over the floor. The player has to step on the light accordingly to get points . The objective of this game is to collect as much points as possible. In the end, whoever gets the highest points win!

This installation is a combination of visual projection and gesture technology.

Aim and Objectives
- to present a technology for people to exercise in a very fun way
- to make people exercise without noticing they having an exercise.
- to make people realize sometimes exercise can be fun too.
- to prove that FUN can change people's behaviors.

Motivation
It is a personal reason. I am getting fatter and can't find a way to exercise in a fun way.
